Sigiri - Sri Lankan Round 2

Headed back to Sigiri last weekend, and even though KM went and didn't find it mind blowing, I confess I'm still in love.

This time we got a fish curry that was still pretty salty, but I think I prefer the dry fish curry (beduma).

The real hit of the evening was a devilled grill speciality that seems more like an Asian stiry-fry, but really did a number on my taste buds. First of all, don't go to Sigiri expecting waitresses who are inclined to pitch their food positively. When we queried our waitress whether we should order the prawns, cuttlefish or fish, she merely explained to us that the prawns were shrimp, named the fish of the day, and described cuttlefish as similar to squid and rubbery. Not the most glowing promotion to say the least.

Since all of the food at Sigiri was fantastic last time, we decided that our waitress didn't know what she was talking about and went ahead and ordered the squid. On the spiciness factor, we initially asked for hot, whereupon she raised an eyebrow and gave us a skeptical look. After our recent seafood description debacle though, we were inclined to ignore her, but when we went on to order the fish curry and had to choose spiciness, we realized that W can't handle a lot of heat and I remembered I had a sore throat, so we dialed the cuttlefish dish down to a medium as well.

Thank the sweet lord we did, because hot is hot at Sigiri. The medium had me happily clutching at my water glass and shovelling lots of this next dish down my gullet to cool the fire raging in my throat.
This is Pittu (pit-tu), a bizarre coconut milk drenched rice log. The restaurant describes it as "a mixture of fresh rice meal, very lightly roasted and mixed with fresh grated coconut, and steamed in a bamboo mould. (Served with fresh coconut milk and onion sambol)." I wouldn't order it again as the texture of the rice was bizarre. It seemed like it was passed through a rough sieve. But it was the only mild thing on the table and went a long way towards saving my tonsils.

This Dhal Curry was lovely. Lentils really make too rare of an appearance on my dinner plate, and it's too bad for my stomach.

We ordered this yellow basmati rice again. If I were ever to become a housewife and push out some little ones, I'd like to try making a variety of flavorful rice dishes such as this one to trick the little suckers into eating real food instead of chicken nugget logs battered and fried with whittled "baby" carrots.

For dessert we opted to share Kiri-Peni (curd & treacle). The yogurt was quite tart, so the brown palm sugar syrup really helped mellow out the dish. I have never had a brown palm sugar syrup and it tasted like a cross between maple syrup and brown sugar. K rather enjoyed this as she loves puckerish things.

After our very hearty meal, we all piled into the Indian grocery store below Sigiri to load up on bags of snacks for movie viewing back at my place. While there, I stumbled upon this whitening cream. It says something that the advertisement is supposed to promote the right half of the man's face as the more attractive once, but here in America many would probably prefer the darker left half.

*sigh* I wish I were on a beach with my 50 SPF Ocean Potion slathered all over to protect from the baking Caribbean sun.
