Hiroko's Place

I've been meaning to go to Hiroko's Place ever since I saw this post on Lunch with Front Studio.

Having not yet kicked my calamari ordering habit, and got a plate of calamari onion rings with ketchup. Soon it would be clear that ketchup is the choice of accompaniment for all things edible at Hiroko's Place, a cute little restaurant tucked away in SoHo.

Verdict on the calamari rings: not a reorder. It didn't suffer from the usual problems of leaden soggy batter or rubbery squid, but the choice of preparation wasn't my style, and I suggest it shouldn't be your style either.

I got the Omu-Rice: ketchup flavored fried rice with chicken, topped with a crepe-thin omelette tand garnished with some exuberant ketchup squiggles, plus a dollop of potato salad.

It wasn't bad. W says it was actually tasty. Couldn't confirm that because I had to open my mouth before each swallow in order to breathe. Still recovering from a cold and being stuffed up doesn't make for very memorable taste impressions.

W went with the Seafood Gratin w/ Macaroni. The cheese sauce is significantly more funny than your standard American mac 'n cheese and almost reminiscent of Campbell's cream of mushroom. Given the liquid, not too cheesy sauce, I'd recommend ordering a gratin with rice.
Hiroko's Place really does fit the bill of American-inspired, Japanese-style comfort food. I'm definitely heading back this summer if only because they serve coffee made with the siphoning technique. A cup of Genuine Jamaican Blue Mountain No. 1 coffee is going to be the first thing I order.
